What Is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease affecting over 2.7 million Australians. It causes the airways to narrow, swell, and produce excess mucus — making breathing difficult and triggering bouts of coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Allergic triggers — such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mould, and occupational exposures — are responsible for up to 80% of asthma cases. Identifying and managing these triggers is central to effective long-term control.

"Well-controlled asthma should not limit your daily activities. With the right diagnosis and personalised plan, most patients achieve excellent symptom control and live completely normal, active lives."

At Gurirab Pulmonology, we go beyond routine inhaler prescriptions — we perform comprehensive airway assessments, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) testing, and full allergen workups to identify the exact drivers of your asthma.

Common Symptoms of Asthma & Allergic Respiratory Disease

Symptoms vary in severity and can change over time. If you experience any of the following, a specialist assessment is recommended.

Recurrent wheezing or high-pitched breathing sounds

Shortness of breath, especially with exertion

Nighttime or early morning cough that disrupts sleep

Chest tightness or a feeling of pressure in the chest

Symptoms triggered by exercise, cold air, or exertion

Worsening symptoms during pollen season or in dusty environments

Chronic sneezing, nasal congestion, or runny nose

Itchy, watery eyes associated with respiratory symptoms

Our Diagnostic & Treatment Approach

A thorough, systematic evaluation ensures we identify the root cause of your symptoms and design a management plan that works for your lifestyle.

01

Comprehensive Assessment

Detailed respiratory history, physical examination, and review of previous medications and test results to build a complete clinical picture.

02

Advanced Lung Function Testing

Spirometry with bronchodilator response, FeNO (fractional exhaled nitric oxide) measurement, and bronchial challenge testing to confirm airway inflammation and hyper-responsiveness.

03

Allergen & Trigger Identification

Skin prick testing, specific IgE blood panels, and occupational exposure assessment to identify your personal triggers with precision.

04

Personalised Management Plan

A written Asthma Action Plan with stepped therapy, inhaler technique review, and scheduled follow-up — tailored to your severity and lifestyle.

Treatment Options We Provide

Our treatment approach ranges from optimised inhaler therapy to cutting-edge biologic medicines — always guided by the latest Australian and international asthma guidelines.

Inhaler Therapy Optimisation

Review and upgrade of preventer (ICS), combination (ICS/LABA), and reliever inhalers with hands-on technique training to maximise effectiveness.

Biologic Therapies

For severe or difficult-to-control asthma: dupilumab, mepolizumab, benralizumab, tezepelumab, and omalizumab — targeting the specific biological pathways driving your disease.

Allergen Immunotherapy

Subcutaneous (allergy shots) or sublingual immunotherapy to desensitise the immune system and reduce long-term allergic reactivity.

Bronchial Thermoplasty

A minimally invasive bronchoscopic procedure that reduces airway smooth muscle mass in eligible severe asthma patients — providing long-lasting improvement.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation & Education

Breathing exercises, trigger avoidance strategies, and structured education to empower you to self-manage confidently.

Common Questions About Asthma Care

A GP referral is recommended for Medicare rebates and to ensure your specialist receives your full medical history. However, self-referrals are accepted. Contact our reception and we'll guide you through the process.

Asthma is a chronic condition with no cure, but it is highly manageable. The vast majority of patients achieve complete symptom control with the right combination of medication, trigger avoidance, and specialist monitoring.

FeNO (fractional exhaled nitric oxide) measures airway inflammation — specifically eosinophilic inflammation — in a simple, non-invasive breath test. It helps us select the most effective treatment and monitor response to therapy.

An initial asthma consultation including spirometry usually takes 45–60 minutes. Follow-up appointments are typically 20–30 minutes. We recommend bringing a list of your current medications and any previous test results.

Several biologic medications for severe asthma are listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for eligible patients. Your pulmonologist will assess your eligibility and assist with the authority prescription process.
